Fredericksburg & the Wine Trail (1 hour)

The classic Hill Country road trip. Drive west on US-290 through the heart of wine country, stop at as many wineries as your afternoon allows, and finish in Fredericksburg for dinner. Browse the Main Street shops, tour the National Museum of the Pacific War, and if you can, stay overnight and wake up to a Hill Country morning that reminds you exactly why you live here.

New Braunfels & Gruene (45 minutes)

Head south toward New Braunfels for a completely different Hill Country experience. Gruene Historical District — the oldest dance hall in Texas, fantastic antique shops, and the Comal River for tubing — is perfect for a spring Saturday with the family.

Bandera — the Cowboy Capital of the World (1 hour)

One of Texas's best-kept secrets. Authentic cowboy culture, dude ranch experiences, horseback riding along the Medina River, live country music, and genuine rodeos. If your family hasn't experienced classic Texas ranch culture, Bandera is where to go.

Enchanted Rock & Llano (1.5 hours)

Drive north toward Mason and Llano for wide-open Hill Country landscape at its best. Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a must — the pink granite dome rises dramatically above the surrounding countryside, and the view from the top on a clear spring day is one of our all-time favorites in Texas.

Port Aransas & the Coast (3 hours)

For a full weekend, the Gulf Coast beckons. Port Aransas offers good seafood, uncrowded beaches in the shoulder season, excellent fishing, and a genuine coastal small-town feel. Spring is the sweet spot before summer crowds arrive.
